Modular Design
A Modular Approach that increases flexibility, and reduces waste
In the film Ratatouille, Auguste Gusteau says, “Anyone can cook.” While I agree with this sentiment, I also recognize that cooking can sometimes feel overwhelming and time-consuming. With this in mind, I wanted my cookbook to be ‘modular’.
A recipe component is a key element of a dish that can be interchanged or substituted based on factors such as cost, nutritional content, time, and personal preference.
- A component includes: the carbohydrate base (like rice, pasta, or grains) the protein source (such as meat alternatives, tofu, lentils etc.) the sauce or dressing.
The Finer Detail sections provide suggestions for component swaps that can save time and money or give the option of simplicity or sophistication. This modularity means you can align recipes to your own needs or goals: to lose or gain weight, to budget or splash out, to spend more or less time cooking. Component swaps allow you to make the recipe your own while maintaining the original recipe’s essence.
Mix, match, master: this book is your culinary canvas.
- Mix and match recipe components for different variations
- Substitute ingredients to match your budget and tastes
- Re-purpose recipe components to minimise food waste
